Your Haringey Huskies are delighted to retain forward Stephen Woodford for the 2022/23 season.
Stephen has been with the club since it was formed in 2017 and quickly established himself as a fan-favourite. He is also the Huskies all-time top points scorer (see his stats at the bottom of this post).
Having captained the team for the past three seasons, the time has come to pass the baton and Stephen will revert to his alternate captain’s role for the forthcoming campaign.
Stephen told us: “Returning to Haringey for another season was never in question for me. The past five years have been incredible, and at this point it feels like the team, management and the fan base are practically like family.
“Passing on the captaincy was never going to be an easy decision, but I feel like it is the right time to do so, to ensure the best person is in the position to push the team towards silverware this season. There is nothing I want more at this point than to get another trophy in the cabinet. I look back on my time as Captain with great pride, winning a league title, reaching multiple finals, and helping get the team through a tough few years during the pandemic. I leave the role with no regrets and only a massive thank you to all the players and staff for putting their trust in me to do the job, which I have always tried to do to the best of my ability.
“That being said, this doesn’t change anything for me, and there is a job to be done. Last season didn’t end the way I had hoped and I’m excited to get back out there and help the team achieve their goals. I will continue to support the new captain, to wear the “A” with pride and as a team, I know we can achieve incredible things this year. And don’t worry I know you’re all thinking it…but rest assured I will be continuing in my role as co-presenter of the Huskies podcast, keep your eyes peeled over the summer!”
Head coach Dan Sampson commented: “It is fantastic Woody has agreed to return to the Palace. Woody is another player that plays for the badge every night. He leads by example on and off the ice; a natural goalscorer with good speed and a good hockey brain.
“He will be taking on a slightly different role this season as an alternate captain. I would like to say that he has been a great captain for the Huskies and led us to our first title. He is dedicated to helping the team improve and being the best we can be. I am sure this will not change, and he will be an integral a part of the team as he has always been. He remains a pleasure to work with and that is beneficial with the plans we have in place for this season.”
Look out for our 2022/23 ‘Own and Loan’ scheme, which will be launched later in June.
